The Amour 781 Plus Size Perspectives Survey Results

In July of 2024 we set out to become more acquainted with plus-size shoppers with a first ever survey -  created to help deliver on our mission, to make the plus-size communities voices heard.

We started simple, with 4 questions; 1. What do you want to see more of in plus-size fashion? 2. Do you feel like the plus-size community is well represented in fashion these days? 3. What makes you feel most beautiful? and  4. What is your biggest challenge in finding new pieces you are excited about?

We were so happy to see over 500 respondents in a short amount of time. A huge thanks to all those who shared with us, we look forward to more conversions about fashion, plus-size communities, and where this industry is headed.  What we heard was inspiring, relatable, frustrating, and something laugh out loud funny. Let’s start with the first question.

question 1

Luxury! You’re speaking our language - we couldn’t agree more. Those high quality, well made, tailored pieces that stand the test of time and elevate every outfit.  We started Amour 781 because we didn’t see ourselves represented in a slice of the fashion world we know 70% of American women deserve to be included in.   Every season we are seeing more and more luxe designers like Tanya Taylor invent more options for plus-size women,  and we hope to see even more on the next trip to market!

But, as we expected, people had feelings. And the “other” category was no exception.   Respondents want the industry to “Bring on the funk, the edge!”, there were MANY requests for casual elegance, evening wear and special occasion clothing that’s not “Mother of the Bride-ish”, and well cut shirts and sweaters that are longer (this comment came up often).

“I love great jackets and outerwear and am willing and able to pay a premium price, but they are very hard to find.”

Our respondents want workwear, which of course can vary from business casual to boardroom boss. With a lack of variety our work uniforms can become a very small closet of basics, considering we spend half our waking days in workwear we believe this becomes one of the greatest misses in fashion today. As we curate more brands for our customers, I think we can all agree there’s more we can do to look for more opportunities to build out the work wardrobe options.

question 2

Are the answers surprising to anyone? We are very interested to see how the answer to this question evolves over time.  At Amour 781 we are always focused on making sure our voices are heard, our curations are MADE for plus-size shoppers, and we are seen behind and in front of the camera.

“I feel like nothing's changed in a decade. Florals, animal print, cartoon characters, cold shoulders... it feels like we're being punished.”

A simple binary question prompted some of the most comments in our survey -  size availability;  design and cut of clothes, variety, trends, and advertising were the primary themes.

“...we are seeing a trend that designers are supplying mid-size fashion 10-14 and claiming they are plus size inclusive. ”

The commentary was especially relatable around size availability.  From, “So many advertisements that claim plus size but only got to 16 or 18.” to “I'm a 3x. That is so "just out of reach" in so many fashion brands.” - the struggle to even define plus-size for many brands remains a challenge. At Amour we only buy brands that design pieces for plus-size people, not size up smaller pieces with no consideration for how clothes actually fall on a plus-size body.

Unfortunately, many of you have noticed that the plus-size section in major retailers is being quietly pushed online.  While we are the majority, it seems counterintuitive to isolate us to the web, but of course we are pretty comfortable there 🙂

“So many designers think if you make the same clothes in larger sizes, that’s being inclusive.  It’s difficult to find fashion that’s actually designed for a plus size body. “

The design and cut of clothes came up again and again.  The lack of attention to detail, careful tailoring and general style is sorely missed, “We are the size majority, yet we are losing ground every day. It's hard to find much beyond basic t-shirts, flowy dresses, and ponte pants. It's really frustrating for those of us who know and desire good quality.“ We can’t agree more, which is why we spend so much time working with designers to encourage the attention to detail we all notice. We love to see plus-size fashion with more style, more great fabrics, more beautiful cuts!  Some of our favorite designers do just that, and we can’t wait to see more in the future.

“I still feel like an afterthought for many brands.”

And, of course, representation solicited many comments around brands and advertising. The current plus-size models being used in advertising was mentioned often with comments that there were “...no real plus size women models“, and that the current trend away from body positive models was worrisome, “ I think the diminishing of body positive models is a setback we need more not less as they are an inspiration…”.

“I do believe it has improved over the last decade, but top brands are still only geared toward US size 12 and below.  They don't want their brand on "plus size" people.“

And then there’s the lack of understanding what plus-size women actually want.  Comments mentioning that they aren’t looking for clothing that is overly sexualized, but clothing that they can comfortably go to work in, “I find too many plus sized options are geared for the very young.  I have no interest in displaying my belly”.

At Amour, we are always looking to reflect and inspire our shoppers with not only practical high-quality items but pieces that reflect their individual style. We curate our collections to serve the needs of our shoppers, and those curations evolve as we learn and listen.

question 3

We loved these answers, and the honesty.  We see you “Dancing Naked” answerer - and we love it!  Our curated collections are selected to make you feel confident and beautiful, of course we want to remind our community that you ARE beautiful every day.

QUESTION 4

We love that new clothing feel, and wanted to know how we can help our customers overcome some of their shopping challenges as plus-size shoppers.  Fit & size are consistently the biggest challenges to shoppers. Nobody enjoys ordering 3 versions of the same piece so often plus-size shoppers know that sizes can range dramatically and more often than not are inconsistent.

“Why change the cut or style of an item just because the size is larger?”

At Amour we are always working with our designers to make sure our diverse clientele are getting options they deserve. You can always make an appointment with Ashley to talk about what might work best for you, in what size and what style or designer. Ashley and team are extraordinarily familiar with the inventory and the fit, and love to help customers find their happy place.
